Kula is located about a third of the way up Maui's majestic mountain of Haleakala. At nearly a four thousand foot elevation, temperatures are generally acknowledged as the most comfortably cool on the island. Rain is pleasantly infrequent and the microclimate here includes a relatively even mix of sunny and cloudy days. Kula land sometimes resembles scenery that one might expect from Ireland, with rolling hills blanketed in green grass and speckled with trees and forests.
While Olinda overlooks the North Shore and Ulupalakua overlooks the South Shore, Kula boasts beautiful views of both shores and the wonderfully scenic West Maui Mountains as well. As with most upcountry real estate, a great number of Kula homes are prized for their magnificent vistas, which increases their demand and therefor, their value. As with all the upcountry areas, housing density is rather low in most places and homes at the higher elevations generally come with a good deal of outdoor living space, sometimes including many acres.
Kula is the gateway to some of the most beautiful state parks on Maui, including Haleakala National Park, which includes the famous Haleakala Crater, Poli Poli State Park with its stately forests, and Hosmer's Grove and all it's gorgeous native plants. In fact, some of the most endangered plants and birds in Hawaii can be found at these wonderfully scenic sites.
Kula real estate is ideal for those that prefer to live in remote and private locations, but the conveniences of Pukalani are not far away and Kula does have a general store and a few restaurants of its own. Favorite Kula activities are horseback riding, hiking, bird watching and especially mountain biking.
