Paia is a lively, vibrant town that attracts a wide array of people from all walks of life. Diversity is certainly Paia's most distinctive feature. There are art galleries, boutiques, grocery stores, health food stores, cafés, souvenir shops, and an enormous variety of restaurants. The cuisine represented in Paia includes sea food, pizza, Mexican, vegetarian, Vietnamese, Indian, sushi, Mediterranean, Hawaiian, American and others, believe it or not.
The wide array of cuisine to be found in Paia is rivaled only by the diversity of people it draws. It began as a plantation town in the 1880's for the sugar cane and pineapple industries and has since seen many waves of revitalization, especially from artisans and hippies back in the '60's and '70's. Those influences remain strong today, but authentic Hawaiian culture is also powerful, as is surf culture.
Located on the North Shore near most of Maui's favorite surf spots, Paia is situated just minutes from Ho'okipa and lies adjacent to Baldwin Beach. The North Shore is famous for all kinds of surf, including tow surfing, kite surfing and it is even considered one of the world capitals in windsurfing.
Its status as a beacon of culture and activity has earned a high level of demand for Paia real estate. Paia homes are well sought after, as is land. Because Paia condos are some of the very few to be found on the North Shore, there is a high demand for them as well. The very close proximity to the ocean also adds a great deal of value to Paia real estate.
