| | Jim Sanders Maui Real Estate Blog Maui Real Estate Information and Resources | Green Energy For Many Maui Homes Cool ocean breezes provide clean energy on Maui January 25, 2008 | | Ever drive to your Upcountry Maui home and notice a group of large white pillars on the West Maui Mountains? Take a closer look and you'll notice these pillars are actually windmills turning in the wind. What you're seeing on that drive back to your Kula home is the Kaheawa Wind Power wind farm; a renewable energy project by UPC Wind. Brought on-line in 2006, the project has become extremely successful in its goal of creating sustainable energy on the island of Maui; creating 125,000 megawatts of electricity in 2007, exceeding it's electricity generation target for the year. These 125,000 megawatts equal the equivalent of the energy produced by 236,000 barrels of oil at a traditional facility, avoids the release of 91,000 tons of CO2 emissions, and is enough energy to power 11,000 Maui homes per year! A wonderful resource for our lovely island environment, and one that gets you thinking of the many ways we can make our own Maui homes more Green; from recycling of disposables to installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof of your Haiku home. |
