Family friendly fun on Maui | | May 30, 2008 | | June is a relati vely quiet month for events on Maui, but the few taking place are sure to be well worth the trip from your Upcountry Maui home or South Maui condo!
First up, this weekend, May 30th through June 1st, is a sun filled celebration of canoe culture at Wa'a Kiakahi 2008. Taking place at the beach fronting The Whaler at Kaanapali Beach Resort (2481 Kaanapali Parkway, Lahaina), the celebration begins on Friday with a traditional Hawaiian welcome to the 10 participating crews of the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association. Following on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. will be free canoe rides, and an all day opportunity to discuss Hawaiian canoe sailing with the canoe crews. And finally on Sunday a farewell ceremony will start at 8:00 a.m., followed by a farewell race from Kaanapali to Molokai.
Later in the month, on June 21st, visit the Maui Arts and Cultural Center for a Taiko Drumming Festival starring Zenshin Daiko, Taikoproject, and the Maui High School Drum-line. These energy filled performers will amaze you with thier drumming talent! Admission for this event is only $15 general and half price for kids 12 and younger. Finally, on June 22nd, the MACC wil be holding the Ki- Ho-‘alu Slack Key Festival. Come enjoy the smooth sounds of some of Hawaii's premier slack key musicians! Some of the great talent scheduled to perform includes: Makana, Ledward Ka‘apana, Dwight Kanae, John Cruz, Kevin & Ikaika Brown, George Kahumoku, Jr., LT Smooth, Dennis Kamakahi, Paul Togioka, Noland Conjugacion, Michael Ka‘awa, Donald Kaulia, and Walter Keale.
