| | Jim Sanders Maui Real Estate Blog Maui Real Estate Information and Resources | Maui Real Estate Scam Alert for Renters Scammers target prospective renters June 20, 2008 | If you're planning on renting a new place until your Maui home purchase is finalized, be cautious when looking on-line for a short term rental. Scammers are attempting to target those perusing rentals on Craigslist by telling prospective tenants that the home for rent is owned by some one out of state, and that they are renting the home on their behalf. The thieves then ask the prospective tenants to complete an "application" asking for personal and credit information. Once this "application" is completed, the renter is then told they are approved and that once their security deposit is received, they will receive the keys to their new rental in the mail. At this point the "liaison" and your money disappear, and they keys never come.
Law enforcement agencies are doing everything in their power to stop these idiots, but it's always a smart thing to do your due diligence before handing over any cash or information to some unknown persons out in cyberspace. |
