Paia - A Historical Treasure
The cultural and historical roots of Paia town.

In the 1880's, Alexander and Baldwin chose a spot just outside the town of Paia for Maui's first Sugar Mill. Anyone who knows Maui, knows how the sugarcane industry shaped its local culture. People came in droves from Japan, China, and Portugal to work in the burgeoning sugarcane industry. These people were the first to leave their mark on the Paia community, and they would influence it for decades to come. By the time the 40's rolled around, Paia was sporting multiple movie theaters, a hospital, a train depot and, just like today, numerous shops. A wave of hippies migrated to Paia in the 60's and in the 80's, Ho'okipa was discovered by windsurfers as one of the best spots in the world for their sport. It may be impressive that Paia has drawn such an interesting melting pot of people, but what truly makes it a treasure is that those people never left. Aside from the old sugar mill that stands just outside of town to this day, you can still taste the rich cultural contributions of the Portuguese, Japanese, and Chinese as well as the hippies and surfers.
