Pacific Primate Sanctuary

There are no native monkeys in Hawaii, so it seems strange to most that Maui is home to the Pacific Primate Sanctuary. In reality, it makes perfect sense! The facility is located in Haiku, where the monkeys enjoy the tropical rainforest weather that closely resembles that of their natural habitat. In fact, the facility has outdoor enclosures that are planted with species related to those in South America. These plants offer supplemental nutrition appropriate to their diets in the wild.
So what is the mission of the Pacific Primate Sanctuary? As you may have guessed, they take in monkeys that are endangered, at risk, or distressed, including those that are the victims of lab experiments. Their goal is not only to protect these animals, but to propogate them as well, which is a particularly valuable effort, in the case of the endangered species. They have been wonderfully successful on that front.
Everyone who works at this non-profit organization is a volunteer. Besides taking care of the animals, these individuals also lecture on rainforest conservation, endangered species, and global environmental change at community meetings as well as schools across Maui. Here's how you can help their efforts.
