How to Start a Non-Profit

line chart on globe

The Maui County Business Resource Center has been kicking things into high gear this month, no doubt due to the economic concerns of Maui residents. They have been offering various training courses and workshops on such topics as making your business legitimate or starting a new one. The workshop subject that they have chosen to present on the 19th of this month of November is a little different, so we thought we'd present it to those of you that are interested in activism. It is called, "How to Start a Non-Profit".

Stuart Funke-d'Egnuff, the Executive Director for the Tri-Isle Resource Conservation & Development Council, will be presenting. Not only has he assisted in setting up a number of non-profits, but he is well versed in the workings of the Board of Directors. In the non-profit world, if you don't know how to get a decent grant proposal together, you have little to no hope of success. Fortunately, Stuart has experience with grant recipients, applicants, and funding institutions, so he can help teach you how to tackle this critical step in starting your non-profit.

Why start a non profit? For many of you, the normal 9-5 job isn't good enough. In fact, the normal small business options such as owning a shop or restaurant may posess little to no allure. Many of you want to make a difference in the world by helping to positively impact the issues that concern you the most. It could be environmental, conservation based, or geared towards providing relief for the economically disadvantaged. We live in a very imperfect world, and although its troubles may not always affect you directly, they are affecting others, sometimes severely. For those of us that can get by, or live in relative comfort, it is a good idea to see helping others not as an option, but as a responsibility. Contrary to popular belief, it is often very possible to meet your financial needs through a venture like this. You won't be getting rich, but if you handle your non-profit properly you will be able to pay the bills.

This workshop will be taking place from noon to 1pm. at the Maui County Business Resource Center in the Maui Mall across from IHOP. Call (808) 873-8247 or email anna.ribucan@mauicounty.gov. if you have any questions.
