North Shore Maui

1. More untouched Maui. The north side of the island has retained some of its wild qualities in a way that other areas on the island have not. Jaws, the unconquerable giant wave surf spot is a North Shore wonder. The owners of homes in Haiku can tell you that the natural world there has a mind of its own, so to speak. The lush, tropical jungles of Hana may house some invasive species, but unlike many other areas on Maui, it also boasts native species, and life is everywhere.

2. Should we really have sun every day? The lushness of the South and West Maui landscaping is due only to the water that is piped in from other areas of the island. The amount of water consumed for these purposes puts a stress on the island's water resources. Land in Haiku and homes in Makawao on the other hand, almost always have all the rain they need and then some. This allows for more environmentally friendly, sustainable lifestyles than other areas on Maui.

3. Authentic Hawaiian experiences. The North Shore is not only home to those that are new to Maui, but a vast number of those who have never lived anywhere else, or never called another place home. It is people like these who can truly share the richest Hawaiian culture with others.

4. Surfing. The best surfing on the island can be found on the North Shore. In fact, this area is considered to be one of the best places specifically for wind surfing in the world.

5. Paia. This ecclectic little town is the favorite stomping ground of surfers, locals, hippies, visitors, and artists alike. Boasting some of the most unique shops, restaurants, art galleries, spas and health food stores on the island, there is no shortage of enjoyable things to do. There are some great North Shore homes in Paia or nearby, if you're a fan of the area.
