East Maui Bamboo Forest

If you haven't heard about the emergence of bamboo as an excellent building material that is easy to cultivate, then a visit to Whispering Winds farm in Hana may be both an educational and fun experience for you. On Saturday, February 14th, educational tours will be held in the bamboo nursery, the bamboo forests and the tropical hardwood forest. These tours are free, and you are encouraged to explore the bamboo forests on your own as well. This is a great excuse to get out to Hana and enjoy the greenery.
The Whispering Winds bamboo farm has undertaken the mission of establishing a bamboo culture here on Maui. Bamboo is an excellent resource for food and shelter. It is also a lot better for our soils and watersheds than other crops on Maui that require more resources to grow. One of the goals on the farm is the education of the public on the beneficial aspects of bamboo, including the advancement of sustainability and ecologically sensitive agriculture in the Hawaiian islands.
The farm includes fourty one varieties of non-invasive clumping tropical bamboos. A few of these varieties have been especially selected to propogate at large for nursury sales on Maui. Their plan is to grow a significant amount of bamboo timber to stimulate use in industries involving the construction of furniture, plywood, flooring, and musical instruments, to name a few. See their website for more information.
