Maui Valentines Day In Haleakala Crater

Valentine's Day is on its way. If you haven't decided on what you are going to do, consider something a bit more unique than the usual dinner in a nice restaurant. If you and your partner enjoy the natural wonders that Maui has to offer, perhaps you would like to participate in a Valentine's Day service trip into the crater?
Haleakala Crater is one of Maui's most unique natural phenomena. Its stunningly distinct and colorful cindercones are reminiscent of a landscape from Mars. "Haleakala" means House of the Sun. From most vantage points on the island, the sun rises from behind the mountain in the morning. According to Hawaiian legend, Haleakala's 10,023 foot summit was the place where the demigod Maui stood when he lassoed the sun to slow its journey through the sky. It is still considered a sacred place in Hawaiian culture.
Although it may seam stoic and unflawed, even the highest point on Maui needs a little tender, loving care. Should you choose to, you can spend your Valentine's Day helping to remove invasive species and preserve the native habitat that makes the Crater so special.
The trip involves hiking in and out of the Crater on the exhilerating switchback trail and staying for the weekend with other enthusiastic volunteers in the rustic Holua Cabin (for free of course). There will be plenty of time for hiking, photography and relaxation on the trip. Meals are shared. For more details about the event, see the National Park Service website.
