Maui Onion Festival 2009

The Maui Onion Festival this year will mark the 20th anniversary of the celebration! It will take place on May 2nd at the Whaler's Village in Kaanapali. Maui onions are famous, and arguably the sweetest onions in the world. They are grown upcountry in beautiful Kula and sold all over the world.
Maui onions are certainly more than worthy of their yearly celebration. Whalers Village has hosted the event since 1990 and the participants are dedicated to the promotion and cultivation of the Maui Onion. Thousands of visitors and residents enjoy the festivities every year.
There will be chef demonstrations, recipe contests, food booths, a Maui Onion Pairing Dinner and a beer garden. Games and prizes will be hosted for adults and keikis. Of course there will be live entertainment as well. There is no admission fee to this event.
This year, the featured chefs will include Russel Siu from 3660 on the Rise, Patric Callarec of Chez Paul, James McDonald of Pacific'O and I'O, Colin Nishida of Side Steet, David Paul Johnson of David Paul's Island Grill and TV children's chef Cutty Cutler. Guy Hagi of KGMB will be the emcee at this event. Chefs will host an onion dish cookoff. Russel Siu will be defending his title from last year's win.
Maui Onion Growers will be present to share information about the history of the Kula onion. Produce will also be sold by Maui farmers.
