New State Website on Hawaii's Renewable Energy Goals
In the fantastic spirit of accountability, the state has just launched a new web site which allows the public to keep track of Hawaii's Clean Energy Initiative, including its status and its progress! You can find it at hawaiicleanenergyinitiative.org.
The site is run by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.
Information on the website includes what the state is doing to meet initiative goals to reduce dependence on oil in Hawaii. The plan is to have Hawaii running on 70 percent renewable energy by 2030. Also, the site outlines projects on each of the Hawaiian Islands and offers tips to businesses and homeowners to save energy.
There seems to be a fair amount of transparency in the website's contents, but it looks like most of it is background information on the general gist of renewable energy and conservation. A box on the main page containing updates on progress would be nice to see. It would give citizens the sense that the state has people working to keep us up to speed on concrete changes. It would also make the experience more relatable.
All in all, this website is a step in the right direction.
