Class for Maui Residents on Keeping Your Idea Safe

We've all seen it happen: your friend or yourself comes up with a great idea and runs it by a few friends. The next thing that happens? Someone they know has put that idea into action and is reaping the benefits.

There are countless ways people can snag your creative genius and unfortunately, it's all too common. You could be a writer, an artist, an entrepreneur or fill any number of other professional descriptions and see it happen to you. When it does, it can be enormously disheartening and frustrating. So how to avoid it?

Good classes often pop up at the Maui County Business Resource Center in Maui Mall, but this is definitely one of the especially "Maui applicable" ones we've seen (and it's free). Making a living on the island can require more than a good work ethic and professional experience. It often requires resourcefulness and ingenuity. This class is called "Avoiding Infringement: The Essentials of patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets."

Presented by Shannon S. Imlay, an intellectual property attorney who is registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the class should impart invaluable information on protecting your creative works and ideas. It's part of the U.S. Constitution that inventors, authors, etc. have an exclusive right to benefit from their own creative work. What Shannon will discuss is how to establish and protect patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets.

The workshop will take place on February 4, from noon to 1:30p.m., again, in the Maui Mall across from IHOP. We this will help some creative individuals maintain their security and peace of mind!
