Grow Organic Food on Your Maui Property

Most Maui homeowners emphasize the value of a beautiful home, but let's not forget the importance of beautiful landscaping around it. Many parts of Maui offer wonderful conditions for growing a plethora of attractive plants.
Haiku is one of the most productive places on the island for this purpose. In fact, growing plants is hardly the challenge. It's stopping them that's difficult. Thanks to this productivity, there are a lot of farms throughout the area, including many that grow flowers such as orchids.
If you would like to take your relationship with the land around your home a step further, you might enjoy vegetable gardening. Not only can it offer great supplemental food to your diet, but can also add supplemental income if you can produce a decent amount.
A free workshop on organic vegetable gardening will be held at the Leilani Farm Sanctuary in Haiku on April 3rd from 9a.m. to 3p.m. It will be led by Melani Ellis, the Director of Land Care at the sanctuary, who has an extensive background in land stewardship and sustainable agriculture.
Some of the things participants will learn about includes starting a garden, sheet mulching, composting, converting weeds, integrating sticks and leaves into the soil and similar techniques. All you need is lunch, water and gloves.
For those of you who aren't familiar, Leilani Farm Sanctuary is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing shelter to rescued animals and to providing humane education to the community. For more information contact Melani Ellis at 463-8587.
