Maui Launches Directory of Green Businesses

Sustainability is a growing objective on Maui for a number of good reasons. The motivation can generally be broken down to two factors: environmental health and affordability. Living on a beautiful island isolated by the ocean includes obvious benefits, but also the drawback that gasoline, electricity and general goods are more expensive. Whatever has to be shipped to Hawaii generally goes through Oahu before arriving on Maui. Fortunately, sustainability is a major factor in cutting the costs associated with shipping expenses.

More and more residents are working to grow and sell their own food or get off the grid with water catchment systems and solar power among other methods. Smart Grid technology, which automatically switches appliances on and off throughout the day, is in its beginning phases of implementation in the resort community of Wailea. All these efforts help bring down living expenses and contribute to a healthier environment. The Maui County Green Book was released this month to help visitors and residents find green businesses.

The Green Book is a tremendous step forward for sustainable living on Maui. Now businesses that went the extra mile to contribute to green practices can be rewarded by those who wish to support those efforts. This 20-page book was a shared project of the county and Maui No Ka Oi magazine.

Businesses are listing by categories like activities, agriculture, cleaning supplies, clothing, health and beauty products, restaurants and lodging. Also listed are farmers' markets, farm-fresh stands as well as recycling and redemption centers on Maui, Lanai and Molokai.

It would be pretty ironic if the Green Book was made with non-recycled paper, but that's not the case. Not only was it printed with recycled paper but also with soy ink! View the book's digital version!
