A Maui Tree Planting Ceremony for Japan

If you haven't had a chance to honor the victims of Japan's March 11th earthquake and tsunami, there is still a chance to participate in a meaningful event for this purpose. The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui and The Aloha Initiative will be holding a Japanese pine tree planting ceremony on Saturday, August 6th at 10a.m. at the Japanese garden of Kepaniwai Park in Iao Valley.

This event is free and open to anyone who would like to appear and show their support in the wake of these tragedies. Mayor Alan Arakawa, who is the Honorary Chair of The Aloha Initiative, will share his condolences along with a message of hope for the survivors of the catastrophe.

If you are unfamiliar with The Aloha Initiative, this was an effort to open our homes to displaced Japanese citizens, many of whom lost family in the earthquake or tsunami, in order to support them and help them heal. A number of wonderful Maui residents have done just that, and the Japanese visitors brought by the Aloha Initiative will be at the ceremony.

A matsu tree will be planted, because it symbolizes long life and perseverance. This symbolism was validated when one of 70,000 pine trees survived the tsunami in the Takata Matsubara forest in the Rikuzen-Takata, Iwate Prefecture. The age of the tree is estimated to be somewhere between 270 and 280 years old, and it has become a beacon of hope.
